alb3670134 Venus and Cupid. Artist: Lucas Cranach the Elder (German, Kronach 1472-1553 Weimar). Dimensions: Diameter 4 3/4 in. (12.1 cm). Date: ca. 1525-27.Cranach often treated the theme of Venus and Cupid, but this excellently preserved panel is the only version in a round format. Playing coquettishly with her veil and glancing at the viewer, Venus ignores Cupid, who is agitated by the situation. His arrow is missing, suggesting that he has been disarmed and is powerless against his mother. The picture was likely intended for display in a personal studiolo. Cranach might have painted the roundel not on commission but on speculation, to be sold to discerning collectors already conditioned by the tradition of medals and plaquettes to appreciate such refined work. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3623666 Johann (1498-1537), Duke of Saxony. Artist: Lucas Cranach the Elder (German, Kronach 1472-1553 Weimar). Dimensions: 25 5/8 x 17 3/8 in. (65.1 x 44.1 cm). Date: ca. 1534-37.In 1505 Lucas Cranach the Elder was appointed court painter to the Electors of Saxony at Wittenberg, serving successively Friedrich III, the Wise, Johann I, the Constant, and Johann Friedrich I, the Magnanimous. The sitter in this portrait, Johann, Duke of Saxony, Margrave of Meissen and Landgrave of Thuringia, was a member of the ducal or Albertine branch of the family as opposed to the electoral or Ernestine line. The bold design and dramatic color, and the capricious but graceful outline of the costume are typical of the style Cranach developed as a portraitist to the court. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3625426 Portrait of a Man with a Rosary. Artist: Lucas Cranach the Elder (German, Kronach 1472-1553 Weimar). Dimensions: 18 3/4 x 13 7/8 in. (47.6 x 35.2cm). Date: ca. 1508.This painting and a Portrait of a Woman in Prayer (Kunsthaus, Zürich) originally formed the wings of a devotional triptych. The young, well-dressed sitter appears seemingly transfixed by the now-lost central image--perhaps of the Virgin and Child--to which he offers a silent prayer as he pauses on a bead of the rosary held in his hand. The man's ring, bearing the coat of arms of the Dutch families of Six van Hillegom and Six van Oterleek, suggests that he came from the Low Countries. Cranach probably painted this portrait during his trip to the Netherlands in 1508. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3600184 Lukas Spielhausen. Artist: Lucas Cranach the Elder (German, Kronach 1472-1553 Weimar). Dimensions: 20 x 14 3/8 in. (50.8 x 36.5 cm). Date: 1532.The sitter, who wears the black-and-yellow striped dress of high-ranking members of the electoral court of Saxony, may be identified by the initials LS on the signet ring as Lukas Spielhausen, who was by 1531 a lawyer in the state judicial curia under Johann I, the Constant. His age of approximately thirty-nine in 1532, the date of the painting, is compatible with the sitter's appearance. The lively pattern of colors and interplay of curves in the costume and the contrast between the man's tightly bundled hair and his expansively projecting mustache and beard give this portrait a striking visual impact. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3678293 Martin Luther as an Augustinian Monk. Artist: Lucas Cranach the Elder (German, Kronach 1472-1553 Weimar). Dimensions: Sheet: 6 1/4 × 4 3/16 in. (15.8 × 10.7 cm)Plate: 5 5/8 x 3 13/16 in. (14.3 x 9.7 cm). Date: 1520.This small engraving shows Martin Luther as a monk of the Augustinian Order, which he joined in 1506. Lucas Cranach was a close friend and staunch supporter of Luther, who, in addition to producing some of the most lifelike images of the man, conveyed an abiding Lutheran spirit in many of his paintings and prints. This image was produced in 1520, the year Luther published a series of pamphlets in which he questioned the church's sale of indulgences and denied the supremacy of the pope. Cranach supervised the printing of the pamphlets. The Medieval Latin inscription that runs beneath the image implies that, though Luther's reflections may be eternal, this piece of paper, its subject, and its artist will all pass away. Directly below the date in Roman numerals, Cranach included his insignia of a crowned winged serpent with a ring in its mouth, which was based on the coat of arms conferred on the artist by Elector Frederick the Wise in 1508. Numerous states of the engraving exist. They vary both in the density of their inking and in the visibility of a mysterious profile of a bearded man in the upper left corner of the composition, clearly visible in a few existing impressions of the first state of this print. It was burnished away in this more common second state. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
